Happy summer!
Yesterday was the first day of summer. With summer we get a lot of things: longer days, more freedom, less hurry, more light, vacations, and … guilt about our bodies.
I know I do it. Putting on that pair of shorts for the first time is excruciating, and don’t even talk to me about swimsuits.
Then add on the summer BBQ’s, music festivals, patio happy hours, and the guilt really starts to stack up. Then we start to punish ourselves with thoughts like, “I need to lose 5 pounds. I’m going to eat only salads all week. Then I’m going to work out every day.”
Why?
Would losing 5 pounds make you happier? Would 5 pounds make that big of a difference in your health? Is buying a bigger size this season really that detrimental to your well-being?
My guess is that the answer is “No.”
One thing I’ve learned on my body positive journey is that loving your body is an ongoing relationship. Some days will be harder than others, but the happiness that comes with not constantly worrying about looking fat, and embracing it when you do, far outweighs the happiness that comes with buying a smaller size or stepping on the scale to find that you’ve lost a pound or two.
Here’s the thing about summer. It’s wonderful. It’s fun. Why deny yourself anything as long as you are happy and healthy? Be flexible. Treat your body with love and respect. Above all, do what makes you happy.
Now get out there and enjoy your summer!
